Line Grüner - New PhD at the Department of Anthropology

From February 1st 2020, Line Grüner will be working on a PhD project focusing on refugees and solidarity in a rural island community on Samsoe, Denmark

I hold a MA in Visual Anthropology (2019) from Aarhus University, where I did research focusing on home-making among Syrian refugee families on Samsoe. As part of my masters I co-curated two interconnected ethnographic exhibitions about everyday life after the escape at the local historical Museum on Samsoe and at Moesgaard Museum in Hoejbjerg, Jutland. Both exhibitions where based on interviews and audiovisual material collected in collaboration with the families over a period of 8 months.

I will return to Samsoe for my PhD to study how new lines of solidarity are emerging between the Syrian families and their neighbours after five years in Denmark and how neighbourliness and solidarity is imagined and practiced in everyday interactions and encounters between the Syrians and other people in their ‘host community’. I am interested in how divergent ideas of solidarity, responsibility, friendship and hospitality influence the social in- or exclusion of the families.

The project is part of a Nordic-British research project called ”Migrants and solidarities: Negotiating deservingness in welfare micropublics”. The project is funded by Nordforsk and is under the Joint Nordic-UK research programme on Migration and Integration. I will be supervised by Mikkel Rytter, who will also contribute with research to the overall project.
