Purzycki studies the processes responsible for religious systems' covariance with threats to cooperation and coordination and assesses their effectiveness in alleviating those threats. He's conducted fieldwork in the Tyva Republic (Siberia), examining how the spatial distribution of ritual corresponds to resource acquisition and managed large cross-cultural projects examining the effects of religious beliefs on the breadth of equitable and honest behavior. Over the next few years, he will facilitate cross-cultural field projects in traditional societies better understand variation in small-scale religious systems.
