The Award honors outstanding work by a museum professional with less than ten years in the field. It recognizes a specific achievement or body of work that has benefited either the honoree’s home institution or the museum field in general.

Before her new role at Aarhus University, Wesam has worked for the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities since 2010. She has effectively participated in several museum projects in Egypt and internationally. She studied Archaeology and History of Art, holds a MA degree in Museum studies, and is currently a PhD Fellow at Aarhus University (Research Project: Community Participation in Protecting Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis: understanding and learning from the “Egyptian Revolution”)

The Nancy Hanks Award was presented during the opening session of the annual meeting of the American Alliance of Museums on the 20th of May in New Orleans, with the attendance of nearly 4000 international museum professionals and recognized organizations in the field.

First given in 1985, the award commemorates the late Nancy Hanks’ lifelong support of cultural endeavors, and in particular her encouragement of young professionals. Hanks served eight years as chair of the National Endowment of the Arts, among other accomplishments.
